3D Printed Revision Rx Carrier Mount for 3M Respirators
The 3M 6000 series of respirators has been popular over the last year or so for tear gas protection at riots, demonstrations, or when you're sitting in your own home while the cops rampage outside. However, the spectacle kits for these respirators - which are necessary if you wear glasses or contacts - are around $150 each, and then you have to provide your own lenses to fit into it. (If you're wearing contacts and exposed to tear gas, they need to be removed, which can leave you blind if you don't have a backup.)
Thanks to the magic of open source, I was able to find people on Thingiverse who had made 3D printable models of alternatives. Awesome!
None of them were quite what I was looking for, but I used one to create my own version. I already had a prescription carrier from Revision, which is made to swap between different pieces of eye protection - for $99 they'll send you one with your prescription lenses already in it, and it fits most of their goggles and safety glasses.
The key piece is the adapter for this revision rx carrier to fit onto the vertical mount made by truhlik_fredy
on thingiverse. Click the image below to download a model of that adapter, or click here.
Once you have the adapter, print Part 1
from the link below. The part you want is the vertical bar that goes from the "nose" to the top of the respirator.
Once you've printed them, you can use metric screws following the instructions provided by truhlik_fredy
to assemble the mount, then snap your rx carrier on. Instead of using brass inserts melted into the mount, I used slightly larger screws put directly into the part - not as strong, but good for testing, because you may want to tweak the spacing between the glasses and your face.
Hopefully this helps a few more people see, without sending $150+ to 3M for two wires and a piece of plastic.
Thanks to these two people on Thingiverse for providing ideas and inspiration:
